On West Zealand there are five unique market towns, Næstved, Skælskør, Slagelse and Ka­lund­borg, each with its own charm and history.

Agersø

Agersø is an island in the Great Belt just 15 minutes by boat from Stigsnæs Harbour located on southwest Zealand. Despite its small size of just 6.84 km2, the island offers stunning nature and a rich wildlife. You can go for long walks – in fact, you can walk all the way around the island – and enjoy the tranquillity of the green surroundings. Only the sound of waves can interrupt your thoughts. The island holds interesting tales, including its role in the English Wars from 1807 to 1814. Explore the island’s historic landmarks and see its many monuments and memorials.

Bjerge Strand

Bjerge Beach is a holiday home area on the west coast of Zealand with views of the Great Belt. The area is known for its two beaches, which are extremely popular and a gathering point for locals and holidaymakers. Colloquially, the beaches are known as the South and North Beaches and both offer plenty of water play, sunbathing and water sports. The area around Bjerge Beach is also rich in nature experiences. For example, just 10 km away you will find Denmark’s fourth largest lake, Tissø. Surrounded by protected nature, the lake draws several different species of birds. Visit the observation tower near the lake and experience birdlife up close.

Havnsø

Havnsø is a seaport on Northwest Zealand. Here you can enjoy life on the beach, which, with its low water, is perfect for water play for people of all ages. Just under 5 km from Havnsø you will find the protected natural area of Eskebjerg Vesterlyng. Known as Zealand’s largest heath, the natural area offers rolling landscapes with beaches, dunes and shrubs – and, with any luck, you might also see free-range cattle and horses. From Havnsø you can also enjoy the view of Nekselø Bay, and if you look carefully, you can see Nekselø and Sejerø in the distance. Both islands can be reached by ferry from Havnsø.

Ka­lund­borg

Kalundborg is a charming old market town by Kalundborg Fjord. The town offers both Danish cultural history and natural surroundings. Explore the medieval history of the market town with a tour through the historic neighborhood, Højbyen. Enjoy the breathtaking 800-year-old church, particularly known for its five towers. You can also stop by Kalundborg Museum and learn more about the history and cultural heritage of the area. The old town is surrounded by lush green nature where you can go hiking, biking or try your luck with a fishing rod by Kalundborg Fjord.

Reersø

Reersø is a small seaport on the peninsula of the same name, located on Northwest Zealand. The small seaport is charming and idyllic. Here you will find one half-timbered house after another along the town’s country roads. The houses are very well preserved, and several of them date back to the 1600s. In addition to the historic charm of the town, you can also explore the lush natural surroundings in these parts of Zealand. Along the coast, you can enjoy the view of the Great Belt, and try your luck with a fishing rod. Reersø is less than a 30-minute drive from Kalundborg.

Røsnæs

Røsnæs is a 5 km long peninsula located on the west coast of Zealand. It is surrounded by fascinating landscapes of open coasts, rolling hilltops and dense forests. You can hike the coastal paths, enjoy the sea views and explore nearby forest areas. Don’t forget to visit Røsnæs Lighthouse for panoramic views of land and water. You can also learn more about the history of the area on this small peninsula. Stop by the old, well-preserved mill, Ulstrup Mill, or discover Røsnæs Church, which is located on a hilltop overlooking Kalundborg Fjord.

Sejerø

Sejerø is a 12 km long island in Kattegat. The island is known as Kattegat’s sunshine island – and for good reason. Sejerø is one of the sunniest places in Denmark. Here you can experience the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the shoreline. The nature of the island is diverse and offers everything from beautiful sandy beaches and wide-open spaces to rolling hills and fields. Sejerø is especially known for its many burial mounds that date back to the Bronze Age. A total of 30 burial mounds have been discovered on the island, and you can experience them via several footpaths that take you around the landscape.

The Great Belt Coast has one of Denmark’s most beautiful coastlines. From north to south, you will find lovely beaches with fine sandy seafloors and clear water. There are no large waves or undercurrents, making it safe for even the youngest holidaymakers to play by the water under supervision. The area attracts many water sports enthusiasts, as there is ample opportunity to explore on the water. Along the coast you will find several hiking trails where you can enjoy the views and the fresh sea breeze. You can also take a break at one of the area’s conveniently located cafés and enjoy a well-deserved refreshment.
