Go scavenger hunting in the wilderness
The colours of the countryside changes with the season and is notably spectacular in autumn with its multitude of colours which change almost daily. As you walk along the seashore or through the forest, you'll undoubtedly stumble upon plenty of natural items and objects to use for indoor activity and craft ideas.
Turn beautiful stones and clam shells into jewellery or create beautiful collages with autumn leaves and/or preserve them by pressing them. Moss, heather, and pinecones are ideal for drying and making into decorations and don’t forget to collect plenty of chestnuts and acorns, in which you eat the fruit after roasting them in the oven.
Get a taste of nature in the autumn
There are plenty of delicious (and nutritious) foods to be found in the autumn wilderness. Why not go for a stroll and pick up the ingredients you need for your evening meal?
You'll find berries, nuts and fruit depending on where you go and make sure to go mushroom hunting, wither in the forest or by visiting a mushroom farm, where you can get plenty of delicious mushrooms to bring home with you.
The Danish Nature Agency offers a list of the various types of mushrooms you can find in the Danish countryside. You will find both edible and poisonous mushrooms so you go hunting make sure to check which mushrooms to look out for – and which to leave alone.
Make your own creamed mushrooms – a classic, delicious autumn dish
There is nothing better than preparing food that you have gathered yourself. Try this recipe for creamed mushrooms and enjoy is alone as a snack on toast, or as a side for your dinner.
You’ll need:
- 250 g mushrooms
- Butter
- 200 ml heavy cream
- Lemon juice
- Salt and pepper
- Fresh herbs
How to prepare:
Clean the mushrooms and cut them into slices. Saute them in a dry pan and add salt. When the mushrooms have released their moisture, add a knob of butter followed the cream and lemon juice.
Season, leave to simmer until it thickens and sprinkle with fresh herbs – e.g. chives or thyme – before serving on toasted bread.
